XANDER

A crack of thunder startled me awake, and I glanced at my alarm clock. Though it was already past time to wake for work, the dim sunlight filtering in from the window made just enough light to make out the sleeping form beside me. Claudia’s soft snores felt foreign but welcome. I kissed her shoulder and reached for my phone. My partner would be waiting for me to discuss the new clients we had coming on board this week, but I had planned before I had fallen asleep with Claudia in my arms to stay home today.

I sent a quick text to let work know I would not be in, and got an instant reply.

Jim: No worries… hope all is well

Xander: All is well… I’m going to be a father again. I’ll tell you the story later.

Jim replied with congrats and well wishes, and I put my phone back on the bedside table and curled up around Claudia, holding her against my chest. She was sleeping so soundly I hated to wake her, but I knew Yolie would be up any time, and she would want breakfast.

Tucking the hair behind her ear, I kissed her cheek and whispered, “Good morning beautiful.”

Claudia covered her mouth and yawned, then turned in my arms and gazed up at me. She looked uncertain, and I didn’t blame her. Everything she’d said last night was true. I had been a complete ass to her for as long as I’d known her. Her eyes told me she felt mixed emotions, and I cupped her cheek, hoping to calm her anxieties.

“I need you to know something.”

She nodded and bit her lip.

“First I want to say I’m sorry. I should never have assumed you would be like Rebecca.”

“Is that her name? Yolie’s mother?”

I nodded. “Yes… I thought we were in love. She got pregnant and I proposed. My partner told me we needed a prenuptial agreement, but when I talked to her about it she went out of control. I was devastated. She was already seven months pregnant, and I had no clue what to do. She had Yolie, and shortly after that she left. I haven’t heard from her since.”

Claudia turned to face me and cuddled into my chest, holding me. I don’t know what I expected her to do, or what I thought her response would be, but this was perfect. With our legs tangled together, and our chests pressed tightly against one another, I opened my mouth to continue, but she interrupted me.

“I’m not going to do that to you Xander. I don’t want your money. I never have. When I saw how wonderful you were with Yolie, I knew the rough mean exterior you showed me was just pain. I had no idea what happened, but I just knew the real you, deep down inside, needed someone to understand. So I tried to be patient. I really cared about you so much.”

I heard her sniffle, and a pang of guilt hit me right in the chest.
